Danny Amendola : Danny Amendola starting for Rams in preseason finale
09/2/2010 05:36 PM
THE NEWS
Danny Amendola will start for the Rams in their preseason finale Thursday, according to the team's Twitter page.
OUR VIEW
Amendola was bumped up to the No. 2 receiver role after starter Donnie Avery was lost for the season with a knee injury. Still, this doesn't guarantee that he'll hold onto the job. Brandon Gibson and rookie Mardy Gilyard both have a shot to wrest the job away before the regular season kicks off.
C.J. Spiller : CJ Spiller held out of preseason finale
09/2/2010 05:32 PM
THE NEWS
The Bills will hold rookie running back C.J. Spiller out of the team's preseason finale for precautionary reasons, according to the Buffalo News.
OUR VIEW
Makes sense. With Fred Jackson (hand) likely to miss the regular season opener, there's no reason to take any chances with Buffalo's newest toy. Especially considering how impressive he's looked thus far. Spiller scored three times and totaled 16 yards over the first three preseason games.
Josh Freeman : Josh Freeman (thumb) throws before preseason finale
09/2/2010 05:24 PM
THE NEWS
Josh Freeman (thumb) was spotted throwing passes prior to Tampa's preseason finale Thursday, according to the team's Twitter page.
OUR VIEW
Freeman won't play tonight, but he reportedly looked good throwing the ball, and that's a great sign for his week one status. The Bucs offense could surprise if sleeper running back Cadillac Williams and rookie receiver Mike Williams come through. Mike's been very impressive throughout the preseason.
Jahvid Best : Jahvid Best not playing in preseason finale
09/2/2010 05:22 PM
THE NEWS
The Lions are keeping rookie Jahvid Best out of the final preseason game as a precaution, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
OUR VIEW
Best averaged an awesome 8.6 yards on 15 carries in his preseason work. He had some "tightness" in the third exhibition game, but it won't affect his week one status, and he still looks like the man in Detroit's backfield.
Vincent Jackson : Report: Seattle clearing room for Vincent Jackson
09/2/2010 05:18 PM
THE NEWS
According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Seahawks are apparently looking to trade TJ Houshmandzadeh in order to clear salary space for Vincent Jackson.
OUR VIEW
There's very little chance that the 'Hawks will find a willing trade partner for Housh and his $7 million guaranteed salary, but it's a nice idea. It seems like their best bet would be to release TJH and just pay him the money anyway. Of course, they'd still have to work out a deal for Jackson, and the Chargers have been stubborn. Stay tuned.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh : Seattle shopping Houshmandzadeh
09/2/2010 03:48 PM
THE NEWS
According to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora, the Seahawks are actively shopping veteran receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
OUR VIEW
Due to make over $7 million this season, however, his market should be extremely limited. Look for him to either remain in Seattle, or to get released.
Larry Johnson : Johnson, Parker battling for roster spot
09/2/2010 02:35 PM
THE NEWS
According to the Redskins' official website, one of Larry Johnson and Willie Parker will most likely be cut this weekend.
OUR VIEW
It could come down to who performs better in Washington's final preseason game on Thursday evening. Further removed from his former greatness, Johnson is the more likely of the two to get cut.
Colt Brennan : Raiders expected to release Colt Brennan
09/2/2010 02:31 PM
THE NEWS
Colt Brennan will most likely get cut by the Raiders this weekend, according to the Contra Costa Times.
OUR VIEW
The brash University of Hawaii record setter simply does not have a strong enough arm to stick in the NFL. This could be the end for him.
Johnnie Lee Higgins : Johnnie Lee Higgins may get cut
09/2/2010 02:29 PM
THE NEWS
According to the Contra Costa Times, Johnnie Lee Higgins is in danger of getting cut this weekend.
OUR VIEW
The owner of just 41 receptions the past two seasons, it's not as if he has a great pedigree to fall back on. Even with Chaz Schilens in injury limbo, Higgins seems likely to get cut.
Jay Cutler : Jay Cutler won't play Thursday
09/2/2010 02:24 PM
THE NEWS
Jay Cutler will not play in the Bears' final preseason game on Thursday evening, according to the Chicago Tribune.
OUR VIEW
It's customary for starters to skip the final game of the preseason, but considering how poorly Cutler has played this summer, he could likely use the extra reps. Heading into Chicago's Week 1 game against the Lions, he remains a mystery.
LeGarrette Blount : LeGarrette Blount may get cut
09/2/2010 02:16 PM
THE NEWS
According to the Nashville Tennessean, rookie running back LeGarrette Blount is not guaranteed a roster spot.
OUR VIEW
Competing with veterans Samkon Gado and Alvin Pearman, Blount is apparently hurt by his limited pass protection skills and lack of knowledge of the playbook. That being said, expect the Titans to end up going with his upside over Gado and Pearman's experience.
Darrelle Revis : Revis' grandma unloads on Jets
09/2/2010 02:00 PM
THE NEWS
Searching for holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis in his hometown of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, ESPN's Rich Cimini got lengthy comments from his grandmother about his contract situation. "Darrelle does what he does because he loves it," she began. "For this to be happening to him, it's almost like a slap in the face, because he's not appreciated. I know he wants to play, but Darrelle understands contract negotiations. Some players don't get it, but Darrelle can read a contract. I think he's comfortable with his decision (to hold out) because he knows what he was told by the Jets and he knows what he's worth." She finished, "people are trying to portray him as greedy, but he has outperformed his contract. For them to put him in this position is just unreal."
OUR VIEW
The Jets' hardball strategy is clearly beginning to unravel, as it is widely believed they did not believe Revis would dig in this deep. Their chances of winning the AFC East without him are remote.
Charlie Whitehurst : Whitehurst failing to impress
09/2/2010 01:53 PM
THE NEWS
According to Pro Football Talk, "there's a sense in Seattle that (back-up quarterback Charlie Whitehurst) isn't as good as advertised."
OUR VIEW
Acquired with much fanfare earlier this offseason, he failed to put any heat on incumbent Matt Hasselbeck, and has played extremely poorly since the first game of the preseason. Barring injury, he will not get on the field in 2010.
Brian Leonard : Brian Leonard remains out indefinitely
09/2/2010 01:10 PM
THE NEWS
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Brian Leonard could miss the first few weeks of the season as he continues to recover from a left foot injury.
OUR VIEW
This means the Bengals will be going with a duo of Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott to start the regular season. Leonard's roster spot is not in danger.
Matt Leinart : Raiders not interested in Leinart
09/2/2010 01:06 PM
THE NEWS
According to the Denver Post, the Raiders have no interest in adding embattled Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart.
OUR VIEW
Happy with their trio of Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski and Kyle Boller, they have little reason to pursue Leinart. Amazingly, Leinart could soon find himself in a similar situation to former Raiders signal-caller JaMarcus Russell: out of the league.
